5 ways to improve your search engine results – for free!

These days searchers use the web to solve their issues or problems. Once a searcher hits your home page you have under-30 seconds to give them the information they want, otherwise it’s likely you have lost them forever. Below are 5 tips to entice searchers to visit your site, find the information they want quickly and encourage them to come back.

Tip 1: Know your keywords

Keywords are everything in a website. They provide the basis of your web copy for a searcher to be able to scan-read your content and find the information they want, they provide easy-to-identify links in your site and most importantly, search engine spiders “tune” into them and use them to rank your site. Use Google Insights (http://www.google.com/insights/search/) – a free tool that will help you understand searcher behaviour.

Tip 2: Make sure your domain name tells people “what you do”

Search engines tune their spiders to consider domain names during a search, so it is important that your domain name makes what you do and the services you provide obvious. You can have several domain names to reflect the various keywords that you are targeting all pointing to your site, especially if your company name URL isn’t obvious enough.

Tip 3: Use keyword links to your advantage

Links within your site definitely help improve your search engine prospects. Make sure your links contain the keywords to create real value to your link. For example:

  1. Here’s a sneak peak at last quarter’s top selling suburbs.

Is more effective than:

  1. We have just released our quarterly snap shot on the top selling suburbs, click here to view it.
Tip 4: Make sure your contact details are VISIBLE

These days people are in a hurry, and 30 seconds does not give way for a searcher to go to your “contact us” page to look up your phone number to call you. Make sure your contact details are visible on every page of your site – there is no use having all that key-word text if it isn’t obvious where to go for more information.

Tip 5: Make sure your website contains a “call to action”

A call to action is a term used for web copy to entice a searcher to take action. An effective call to action will be “live” – it will ask you to purchase, subscribe, apply, contact, inquiry and contribute.

Using effective calls to action will entice people to return to and refer your site – confusing and complicated text will drive them to distraction. Every time you write web copy you should have at least one call to action at the end of it for results.
